1992 YJ Frame Rust

Hi guys Im new to the forum and I'm sure you guys are sick of hearing about everyones frame rust. Anyway I have a 1992 Wrangler that I bought knowing nothing about these except that they are cool. I knew I needed a tub so I bought one. Just got the old one off and found the famous frame rust. I saw the wraps from daveysgeeps and autorust but I really dont want to Box in the rust. Have any of you cut out the rust and welded plates to the frame. I want to do mine so after I grind my welds the frame is smooth. has anybody done this and have pictures of the process. I've been looking under any YJ i find and everone here in Maine has had the frame welded but I want to make mine so you cant tell. I'm a very good welder but I want to get everyones opinion before i get balls deep into this project. Thanks Guys and Gals

Thanks Ibuildembig thats what I was afraid of. Up here all the used frames are junk and it would cost a bundle to have one shipped. Boy I wouldve loved to get that one that was on here last year in New York

Not that I know of...too bad your arent closer, I have a bent frame that is rust free down here thats gonna go cheap.

The problem your gonna have is the frames are super thin as it is and its gonna be hard to get a good weld to them for a patch....hence the reason most of them are scabbed over.

interesting... if you can get a frame and want to swap it, I'd say thats a better route if more than 10-15% of the frame is gone from rust. If your looking at less than 10% of the frame I would do like your thinking and replace the steel. The front from the axles to the bumper is the part to rust first most the time. You can get jeep frame repair kits with pre-cut steel to weld in. Here is an example;

got to be something on this forum... but thats all I could find with pics right now.

Cut the rust out of the frame, make your patches and weld them in. Yes you will be able to tell afterwards that the frame was fixed, but so long as you cut the old rust out first, then welded in a structurally sound repair, what does it matter how it looks underneath?

Thanks for all the help guys. Im leaning towards welding up this frame till I can find a frame in better shape. Thanks Jim711 I didnt know the shock mounts were available. How much $ are they? I was going to weld in Ford upper mounts. I care what it looks like I try to make anything I do look good. Guess theres going to be plenty of sleepless nights and Heineken in my future.
