Check the frame for major rust at the rear shackles and the trans crossmember/skid plate. If it has carpet lift it up and check the floorboards. Make sure the 4wd engages.

How many miles?
Frame rust is important, look closely around the rear shock and under the floor mats, especially in front seat area. Take a magnet and check for plastic filler in the body....If it has those aluminum boilerplate covers its probably rusted out underneath.
Check the oil, should be clean not brown and milky. Any rapping sounds from the engine?
4wd works in both H and L. No vibration at speed. Gauges work? they can be a bitch to diagnose.
Look inside the air cleaner for oil, could indicate blow by.
Transmission should shift smoothly up and down with no grinding..if its hard to shift or grinds this could be bad syncros..
Any leaks or wetness around the diffs or hubs?
This is just a few things to look out for....Goodluck and hope its a keeper...

If I were in the looking stage I would scratch looking at a 4cyl. you will never regret going to a 4.0 6cyl. they may not get the milage a 4cyl does but more than make up for it in performance.
