1995 Jeep roll cage question.

okay we all know how the lame "family cage" looks on they Yj. and does any one know how the Cj's look how they have no cross beam. their roll age starts in the back than just stops. well i removed mine off my YJ it looks JUST like a Cj. its a free cheap mod you can do. and my last question is. is it illegal to have NO roll cage at all like if i unbolted mine for an old willys look?

I dont believe it is illegal but if you do any wheeling at all or have ever have passengers in your back seat it would be very dangerous.

Damn

You don't like your roll bar, take it out. BUt first.

April 2002 I10 YJ Rollover
We just happened to be driving down I10 to visit Palm Springs and noticed a YJ on it's side on the access road that runs parallel. We stopped and the owner and police let us take lots of pictures. Turns out he was driving about 40 MPH along the access road when a coyote ran out in front of him. He reacted naturally, which is to swerve to avoid the animal and hit an embankment that divided the access road (thank goodness) from a busy Interstate 10. The driver was in a daze and still trying to recollect the event when we showed upso we're not totally clear on whether or not it completely rolled or jump rolled onto it's side. As you can see from the pictures, there wasn't much damage and the driver wasn't hurt badly because he was wearing a seatbelt. This was a pretty much stock Wrangler YJ. Note the bend spring perch and also the gaping wound near the slip yoke on the transfer case. Many thanks to the driver and the police for letting me take quite a few pictures and for letting me post them. I'm happy to report he was seriously thinking about buying another Jeep.

That happend on-road. think!

That roll bar is there for a purpose. I reccommend to leave it in there imagine falling on your head at 55 with a jeep slammed down on top of you. Tell jesus I said hello.

Yj Family cages leaps and bounds better than the CJ. It will protect the rear passengers and the streamers to the front windshield keep it from taking your head off.

I don't think the family bar looks lame. I think it looks cool, and seeing as the seatbelts are tied into it, I wouldn't want to go through the trouble of installing lap belts. Maybe just take the spreader bars off. See how you like that look.

I did switch out for the family style roll bar on my 1990 YJ. Most of it bolted up except for a couple of the bolt holes. I cant say whether or not the doner YJ was in a wreck that may have tweaked it, but I just drilled and put 1/4" metal backing plate. I have heard that others have bolted up no problem. I still miss putting the front window down like my CJ, but I heard there is a conversion bar to make it do that.

You all make AWESOME points thank you. and i love my roll cage. and would never remove it for a long peroid of time i just wanted to take it off and go to store maybe and take some pics. but "4jeepin" i did take the streamers off. and it indeed looks like a CJ style. i love that look and might i ask, what was jeeps purpose in the CJ if it was intended for "civilian" use why didnt they put streamers to the front. they like just stopped it right behind where the passenger and driver sit.... i still to this day dont understand, and i love the 91's rollage i want one so bad, i never really take people with me wheeling, i normally go with a group and i never have a back seat in, i take all my gear, my jack, airtank shovel ECT.... any one have an answer to my question about ^?

The on going redo of the cage over the years from what I understand was in part to the gov't regs for safety.

My early YJ cage has much thicker and heavier tubing when I compare it to a TJ or YJ with a family cage.... Not sure if that matters or not though. My family isn't protected though, haha.

Anthony,

Here is a picture of a Jeep I helped recover form a ravine, about 50 yards off the Old Seattle Jeep Club trail near Liberty, WA. 07/03/11. The guy walked away with a few staples in his head. He was damn lucky he had a full rollcage.

I wouldn't even start my Jeeps without the rollcages intact. Just friendly advice. yj93ben

When we were doing our build, I thought it looked cool without the bar also. But since my girls were going to be driving it we went the other way and built a full cage around the factory family bar.

Oh and YJ JeepFreak we made this mod for dropping the window:

Pull the pin and down it goes...even quicker than my old CJ!

That is a great looking set up. I love the way you connect the bar for windshield support. Do you ever run a hardtop, and does it fit okay? The reason I ask is that when I switch tops, I have to adjust the bar for a tighter seal. Thanks again for the pics & ideas.

We put the hardtop on and measured the distance from the windshield to the factory bar and took not of the reveals on the hard doors. When we fit the brackets we tried to match...we'll see in November if our calculations were right since we haven't had the hardtop on since it was all painted and remounted. We run a besttop in the summer and the rear bars just clear as we used the top supports during all the fitting and tack welding just to make sure we'd be able to drop the top still while maintaining as much headroom as possible.

Not to hijack Anthony, her's a shot of our YJ without a roll bar.

Sorry no pics of it painted...I did think it would have been cool to leave off if I was driving around town.

I'd be freaked out to drive around without the roll bar. Even with the family cage upgrade, I'm in the process of sourcing 120DOM 1 3/4 bar to build additional supports for mine.

roll over

Anyone want to speculate on the slowest speed for a roll over. (Extreme 4 wheeling excluded) I could probably come up pretty close to winning. Mine was doing less than 5 mph when the whole thing started and about 1 mph when the actual roll over occurred. And that was on a paved road and stone sober.

So, don't even think that just because you are going down the street to the market that you don't need it. You either do, or you don't. That is your choice. The distance only impacts the probability slightly. And we all know that the majority of accidents happen very close to home.

I wouldn't call my last rollover extreme by any means and it was very slow. I was coming up a trail with the incorrect angle and my front tire buried in a rut. When I went to back myself out of it to go around, I backed over a drop spot on the opposite side of the rut and the whole thing tilted straight back and over. Was so surreal. Whole maneuver happened in the 3-5 MPH range.
