2.5 95 yj noisy?

just wondering if it is normal for these 2.5 engines to sound loose at certain rpms?loose as in sounds like the rods are gonna find a new home on the ground or bottom of the oil pan.only sounds really smooth at idle or under a load but at about 3500 rpm she sounds like really loose.im sure if it was gonna blow it would have.runs strong and has only 101500 miles roughly on it...thanks for the input.

I had a similar issue with my 94 Wrangler....It sounded like I had a rod knocking and It kept getting worse and even loader, so after having a mechanic look at it he said the manifold gasket was cracked or blowed out in backend of manifold and needed to be replaced. So I went and got new gasket but on the initial tear down, I found that the last three manifold bolts were so loose that I could unscrew with my fingers. But would not have noticed if I hadn't removed the fuel assembly. I tightened the bolts and then check the rest and found there were quite a few bolts that apparently had loosened overtime. Fixed issue and have not had any problems since. Check and see if this might be what is happening with your jeep. If so, will be a easy fix. Hope this helps anyways

I think mine had bad rod bearings in it at 286,000 + miles. At idle and under load it was fine, but soon as you let off the gas as it wound down to idle rpms it would audibly knock as the engine decelerated. It was unnerving at the time, but I drove it like this for a year.

ok checked manifold bolts and all is good so i called my dad who had a yj and he had the same issue and since he was a mechanic what he told me makes sense.timing chain tentioner built into the cover has a spring that wears out and will sound like a rod knock at certain rpms.eases my mind considering i have been running it pretty hard this week on the highway and it runs like a champ and hasnt blown up.i will keep ya posted as to his issue for others with this noisy 4 cyl.

Chains have been known to actually wear a hole in the cover...Mine is due, when I had the pan down a month or so ago I could see some of the sprocket teeth, they were worn to points.....

hey does it sound like its under the valve cover?its sounds just like the same prob that i have. i had to replace a lifter it was skipping so bad that fixed that prob, but it still real noisy. sounds just like something hitting the inside of the valve cover.drive me nuts certain rpms it goes away?
