Question 2.5 TBI EGR check?

Is there a way to check the egr valve to know if its working properly? I've been having bad times with my 90 2.5 since I've owned it. It has all the symptoms anyone else with one of these dang TBI motors has; backfire, rough idle, constant problems. I've replaced TPS, crank sensor, O2 sensor, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, ignition coil, fuel filter. As of lately the plugs are getting black crap all over them, and the O2 sensor was covered too. I cleaned them up with a wire brush and it ran better for almost a day. I'm almost ready to sell it and get something else with a 4.0 mpi. Just wondering if there is a way I can check the egr to be working or not. Anyone that has a TBI motor, and knows something about them, please get back to me on here, or PM me. Thanks
