Question 2.5 timing chain

ok this is driving me nuts .I can get the marks aligned but the dist is pointing at number 4 I have rotated the engine at least 8 revolutions checking each time. At TDC #1 the rotor point at #1 and marks on crank and cam should line up. right ? why cant I get this thing all lined up.
reason Im in there is that timing chain is slapping and sounds like shit still runs ok intermitted miss at idel buts runs good for a 4 banger. Its been a while since iv done engine work but damn .
please help.

after rereading the book again it says to .#1 cyl TDC, then rotate engine to align marks ,ok .change it out .I dont know why I was worried about the dist position.
then reading on I have to rotate again .putting the cam gear at 1 O clock position.and then count the links to the mark on the crank shaft .
sure is a wacky way to set up timing.

Whenever you tear an engine apart, it is always recommended to put piston #1 at TDC. This way you can assemble the engine perfectly in time with all of your timing marks up.

Sounds like you've got it figured out though.

Also, seems like you might have found this out, but it's definitely helpful to read the manual through the specific section a few times before you actually put into practice. The better of an understanding you have of something, the easier and more capable you will be able to do it.

If you ride an Iron head, and drive a 2.5 YJ , YOU SIR should be beat with a Club! LOL get a Shovel Head {or an 09 Electra Glide Classic} Like I finally did .

Red face

I sold the Ironhead and bought the Jeep.now the ghost of the ironhead is haunting my YJ . I finally got to drive the YJ this morning .and glad I didnt go far .found a major oil leak .
at idel it will not leak.only at highway rpm. drove 3 miles and lost 2 qts oil.found out I need the sleave and seal on the Harmonic balancer . and also found the artical from JP on fixing the dreaded oil leaks .
Ive looked all over the block to see if it was casted buy AMF.just joking .on the bright side the thing runs great and will fix the dang leaks in the morning .
I never knew changing the rea main would be as easy as JP said it would. I just need this little 4 banger to run a little longer .
