2.5 to 4.0 swap

hello i have a 2.5l yj rio grande i am thinking about putting in a a 4.0 i will probably stroke it before i put it in but how hard is this going to be. i know i need a new trans,transfer case, not to mention a 4.0 complete with wiring harneses. will i have to mess with the motor mounts? thanks

Im not a YJ guy but if you are going to go through all that effort why not drop in an 8cyl ? Just makes more sense to me.

Your gonna have to cut and reweld the frame perches, different radiator possibly, your gonna need all the sending units out your old motor, and a 4.0 tach.

ok thankyou. also if i relace the current transfer case with one from a 4.0 will i have to mess with the drive shaft?

the output spline is the same no matter what, the length may be different

Well if you build it right and use a good motor why would an 8cyl be any less reliable. On that not I have actually read that stroked 4.0s are much less reliable than the original 4.0.

ibuildembig. let me know how it goes if you do it before i do. also i saw that you part wranglers...i think it was you. but how much should i expect to spend on the trans and t case for a decent used one.

I get 700-750 depending on the mileage for a tranny/case combo

I'll be doing the machine work on the block by the end of the month

Another Idea, Look for another wrangler with a rusted out frame for cheap.youll have all the parts and the exact locations of all parts needed wiring harness and sell the rest to help recoupe the cost of the swap
around here you can find a good running ragged out YJ for 1500 or less.

yes 4.0 block, 4.2 crank....dunno what rods yet

You can reuse the wiring you allready have.Add a wire to pin 38 and 58 for the two extra injectors.And the 6cyl comp.
