2.5 vs 4.0

I'm driving a 2.5 as a DD, a good friend of mine is driving a 4.0 but in a TJ (1998) so if im not mistaken except fot the coil spring all the ration in is tranny are the same as a Yj right? Here is my question... to all of you who are bashing the 2.5 have you ever drove one that was in really good condition? Im not trying to be cocky but we're both living on the same street, working at the same place and im having some incredible mpg for a Jeep (around 16-17 mpg) and i dont have a light foot. Im driving around 65-70 mph on the highway (so is he)....

I'm not pretending im pushing the same amont of power than he does but we have the same amount of lift with the exact same tire (31 dick cepeck FC2) and his mpg are around 10-11....

ok he have more power but the 2.5 is a great mill too (guthless but a great lil engine)

the only cons for me on the 2.5 is.... THE TRANNY!!!!!

i have 130 000 miles on mine and he have a 120 000 on his.... that was something i wanted to share with everybody lol

I get around the same with my 2.5L 15-17mpg.. i have a 4in rc lift and 33x10.5 Bfg Km2s. Many people bash the 4cyl but honestly i kinda like it lol.. i mean.. my stepdad has a 6cyl tj and its around stock and can feel all that extra power and torque compared to mine, but hey.. its all in personal preference really.. 6cyls pick accelerate quicker obviously and have a lot more power on the highway.. but i love my 2.5L.. probably cuz its mine

I got 12 mpg with my k-5 blazer with 650cfm Edlebrock carb on a 350+ HP 383 cid, 6" lift and 37's. Your buddy is either doing the math wrong, or needs a tune-up bad. Maybe even an O2 sensor or something, but that just doesn't sound right.

My 90 2.5 on 33's gets about 15 with mixed driving using correct speedo gear. I always get 10 gallons when I go to town and have checked it many different times. All of my 4.0's get about 15-17 mpg with all on-road driving with some highway and some start/stop driving.

The 2.5's aren't complete crap or anything, and the later ones actually had a little more power and fuel economy, but they still will never be a well tuned 4.0

I have actually been wondering about the 2.4 or 2.5's they used in the Ford Pinto's. A lot of circle track cars use them, and I have seen a lot of aftermarket kits for them. They can reach 250 + H.P.
That would be overkill, but may be a project for me in the future

my 92yj with 2.5 feels like a race car compared to our 97 4cyl ranger..
not sure how much that will change after i get the yj out of the shop with the 4inch lift and 33x12.50s .. the little i have driven the 2.5 i cant complain, i didnt want a wrangler for speed anyway i want it for where the asphalt ends---lol

Ford Pinto had a 2.3 made is West Germany, true you can get a lot of HP from one, I have ran a few of them years ago,But that is at a Very Very High RPM, like 8,500 to 9,000, that's Not the kind of 4X4ing I do!
