It's a Jeep thing. You wouldn't understand.

Just kidding I'd much rather have a remanufactured engine anyway than someones used one. You never know what you're getting when you buy a used engine.

After owning the 2.5 for two weeks...I have to ask...why would one purposefully go looking for one?

Mine would make a great boat anchor and I am officially looking for an AMC I6...

The only good thing about a 2.5 is that AMC made them. But I can't get up a medium highway grade to save my life.

Now now, take it easy on the little 2.5. the 2.5 should be able to keep it's own just about anywhere that isn't ALL hills. But if you are expecting it to be FAST- you shouldn't have gotten a jeep. It doesn't NEED to go fast, and even the I6 won't. If you are having this much trouble with it..I think something is wrong with your 2.5. You could also turbo or supercharge it to get it up near the power range of an I6, though it might be more expensive than dropping in the engine yourself.

My gripes have nothing to do with speed. I have a J10 with a 360 that performs uphill/highway just like the 2.5...(compression issues).

Don't care about speed. Just about power. Am on the verge of starting new thread to query owners about mods/upgrades related to power on the 2.5s. In fact I want to ask owners about fi/tfi/tbi/powerjection etc.

Yes, did read the archives. I don't believe removing the air restrictors or a K&N is going to help.

I take full responsibility for maintenance of the engine. It's solid.

Man to man, I gotta be honest, uphill on a highway is heartbreaking.
ANd I must also confess I live at 3500 ft and work at 7000 feet.
Had a slant 6 in an S-10 a long time ago and that had some highway giddyup.

Sorry to hijack thread--gonna start my own on the topic of enhanced power for the 2.5.

I just have bad luck.it also seems that AMC=AMF.Not really just frustrated. The 2.5 has plenty of power for me ,I dont have to run highway speeds I cant say Ive even drove mine long enough to do so.LOL.
I had a 1980 cj5 with a 258 Best engine ever built IMHO.but in this state you just dont go throwing different powerplants in your vehicle ,without major BS from inspection stations/reconstructed titles and whatnot.F that
Back to my problem the cam seems to in ok condition .new lifter and bolt back together and run it for now.till I find the right engine for the money.or a donor 6banger jeep.

If you can wait about 2 years you can just have my old one.
Runs great, uses NO oil at all, doesn`t even drip,, (unless my dipstick continually lies to me)
I can`t do my conversion with the 350 I have and want to put in it because of those dang emission laws until 2013 so I`ll be driving it for 2 more years with the 2.5.
But I`ll tell you, I have no complaints about the 2.5 really except for lack of power, this conversion is just something I want to do,,,
Mainly I think just because my wife always asks why. *lol*

A V8 in my Wrangler would only get me in trouble, too!

I've had my Jeep J10 for 8 years with the 360, always getting 10 mpg.
I'm done bad-mouthing the 2.5. I get 23-24 mpg and it's like a whole new world of not spending money...

Okay, well big hills...yeah, that's a problem in the 2.5. My best advice is turbo charge it- or re-gear. That's what most people with 2.5 problems do. Bump it to 4.88's, and you get 5th gear back with bigger tires, supposedly. JPmagazine did a test on that, and they concluded that you can get more usable power out of a gear swap for slightly less than you can with a huge amount of bolt on power parts. Their website has that article in it somewhere. They also have the article about the 2.5L turbo from 505performance...both of which were done based on a yj, so it's fairly accurate for us. But then...23-24 mpg? HOW?! I could live with a little downed power for that kinda mileage in mine o_o. Even driving nicely I get 17-18 tops. And if I drive nicely 5th gear isn't useful for anything other than keeping a steady speed on a flat road...and neither is 4th.

I apologize sincerely for hijacking this thread, by the way. Good luck with finding a reman. If not for the price, I'd ask if you had considered a Jasper engine..but aren't they new, and thereby very pricey? I don't really know, to be honest.

Ok check it out I've heard of these swaps and have watched the youtube videos...4bt swap. Its a cummins 4 cylinder turbo diesel and im debating of doing this swap or a v8 swap im starting to lean towards the diesel conversion though due to the amount of torque they can produce and i would just love to hear the blow off valve everytime i shift it.

Hey Brent I tried starting the same thread, and got no replies to it,because I basically answered all of my own questions I guess.I inquired about deeper gears, cold air intake, tbi spacer, hotter ignition, also found out Jet makes a power module for the 2.5 that plugs in the ecm .Im kinda in the same boat, the 2.5 runs great and thats the only reason Im keeping it,but if she starts to crap the bed,Im going for the I6.Good luck with your thread though, and if I come across any suggestions in my quest for more power I will be glad to share with you.

So I feel pretty decent that my 2.5 will run close to 75 on the highway pulling 33's up and down hills? like to keep her at 65, and still cannot figure out why there is a 5th gear in these things. First little hill I approach and back to fourth she goes...

POWER JOKE?

A DURAMAX would be incredible.
I have a 6.6/allison in my HD. I have fun with camaro's,charger's,and mustangs.
I could not even imagine that much torque in a jeep.

Had one heck of a time selling a used ( running ) motor and a rebuilt for $300. No one wanted a 4 banger. They came with my YJ and I didn't want them either !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
