32RH trans to 42RH/42RLE / AW4 swap

Just curious,

Have anyone done this? I'm interested about 42rh because it's hydraulically controled.. But if anyone did any other 4spd auto swap..

I am curious as well. Im working on a buddies YJ and found the trans is shot. Going to replace it with a junkyard trans but need to know which one to pull.

Check out my friend Stu's website. More notably, the site index for TONS of write-ups including 2 different AW4 swaps.

We used it to swap an AW4 into an LJ.

thanks for the link, but as for me and my project that is a little more in depth than i have the capacity to go. I was hoping for a straight swap with little to no modification. this yj is just a daily driver so it doesnt need to be bulletproof

I swapped the AW4 into my 91 Yj...its very straight forward just make sure you grab everything from the flex plate to the Tcase. This way you don't have to worry about spline issues. You will also need to clock the Tcase up before mounting it to the auto trans... aka drill new holes to match the ones in the trans your pulling out of your jeep. If you check out "Radesigns.com" for all your shifting needs....he also lots of real word info regarding this swap.
Hope this helps.

I think the best thing to do is make it a stick-O-matic and skip the TCM for now....get a shifter from Rory at Radesigns and you be on the road in no time....you can add the TCM later to make it full auto if you find you want. All it takes is 12v and a ground for the TCM and your good.
I would look for an 91-92 trans from an Xj myself.

There is a new arrival 95 xj at a local yard. I havent decided if i wanna do a junkyard swap or rebuild the 32rh i currently have. I have enough knowledge to rebuild a 351w but have never tried my hand at a transmission...thoughts?

The AW4 is an almost bullet proof trans that will run for over 300k. If I could make a suggestion I'd swap make the swap to the AW4 and make sure it comes from an ODB1 Xj. It'll be very simple to deal with.

Does the 95 have OBD1 or 2? I did a quick google search and came up with both...

Looks like your good with the 95 bud...just make sure you grab the Tcase because its a 23 spline and you now have a 21 spline.

I believe the '95s are obd1. From what I have gathered doing research before buying my daughters '01 tj is that the 32 rh is a pretty stout trans. If I was not going to do a V8 swap I would put a AW4 in mine. I just prefer an auto to the manual. Good luck, Dave
