33x13.5 too big for stock axles?

I'm looking at a set of 33x13.5 tires for my yj and was wondering, is that too much for the stock axles to handle?

Not if you are smart about it.

License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote.

Yes and no. It depends on how heavy your foot is, and another varying factor I've heard lately is whether or not you have an auto or manual.

The rear D35 is a very weak axle. Mine came apart on me on the street. Some people break them on the stock tire size, others have managed to get by with 33's. Automatics you can creep through obstacles relatively easy, manuals you have to use a bit more finesse and pick your paths wisely. It's a 50/50 chance you are going to break it, and more often than not, you are going to break it right in the middle of where you do NOT want to be..

I personally wouldn't risk 33's on the rear axle. I'd try to go for a Ford 8.8 first.

The front D30 is a stronger axle by design, I've seen people rocking 35's on it before, without being delicate.

2.5L Genius of some sort.

Im running 33's, 2.5L and an AX5 5 speed manual.

I know, not the strongest setup, but for some reason I can get a good chirp out of second.
I know its going to happen sooner or later (KaBOOM~), but after 4 years commuting and beating the crap out of it, its still going strong.

My buddy ran 33's on his stock set up for years & never had a problem....but then the wildest he ever got off road was playing in some sand pits.

I'm not worried about running 33s, I'm just wondering if 13.5 will be too much width for the axles to handle
