4.56 on Stock Axles

I have a 1992 YJ with a 4 cyl. and trans that are about to be rebuilt and I'm going to replace the diff. gears with 4.56's. I will be towing a small trailer with the jeep as we don't have a truck anymore. I am worried that the stock axles are not strong enough to handle the torque put out under load because of the gears. As soon as I can afford it I will switch to chromoly 30 splines with locker, but at this point that looks pretty far off. I will eventually put on 33" tires as well. Will the 4.56's give me enough umph with the 33"s? Let me know what you think.

with that 4 cyl 4.56 gears are not a big change. you nor your jeep will not be very happy towing anything more than your behind in a 4 cyl on 33's.

Should I go straight to 4.88's? If I do, will the stock axles be able to handle the torque?

thats as big as you can go w/ aftermarket gears. i still wouldn't tow w/ 33's. the axles aren't rated for 33's, although many do 33's on those axles, i've done it. but then you are adding towing also. i wouldn't, people brake axle shafts on the street w/ that set up.

Thanks Doc. I have 31"s now and the trailer I'm going to tow is just for hauling trash to the dump. It will weight (trailer and all) about 1000 lbs. fully loaded. I just don't want to have to buy another ring and pinion when I switch tire sizes to get the lower gearing I am missing now with the 3.73's.

Just got to remember that when you go to a gear like a 4.10 through 4.88, the physical size of the ring gear and pinion are smaller. This being said, if you ever put that Jeep in a bind with a low gear and a loaded trailer you stand a chance of busting the ring gear or pinion. I have broke many ring gears in all kinds of differentials.

34's

My cousin has a 95 2.5 yj with factory axels with front and rear lockers and 34 in super swamper tsl's... i have watched him bounce it up and down on rocks and put it in all kinds of binds and has yet to have a problem out if his 4.56 gears... we done alot of research and they are alot of gear companies that dont hold up well but whatever the brand is he bought, which i cant remember, has a very good rating... now as far as pulling a small trailer... 4.56 will not b low enough on the 2.5... on his 2.5 yj running 4.56 gears with the 34's he is still 500 rpms under stock... with u going with the same gear and 33's u would run 200 rmps under stock at 55 mph... now with the 4.88 u would only be running 20 rpms under stock with 33's at 25 mph but that would put u at a bad trail ratio..
