4 speed manual ?????

I am possibly going to buy a 94 wrangler 4x4 with a 4 cyl. problem is it has a 4 speed manual. It has A/C. It's not a rock climber. I'm concerned about this for higway use. Should I be worried? I know these were suppose to come with a 5 speed. The owner stated when he bought it it had the 4 speed. He bought it used and does not know why the previous owner changed it to a 4 speed. Can this lead to problems being a 4 speed?

If your concerned about fuel mileage you should look at buying a civic instead.
Wranglers were not built for fuel mileage.

Not using 5th on a 5 speed is nothing like a 4 speed. The RPM to power range will be completely different. It will be much, much slower than a 4 cyl with a 5 speed (that never sees 5th gear)...

agreed.. my YJ has a 5th but never see's it.. However a 4 speed is going to run at a completely different RPM range. Take it out for a test drive and highway run it. If you can get up to 65-70 and the RPM's are not extremely high- you may be ok.

ok. I bought the jeep. I'm happy with it. It's a 5 speed that will not go into 5th gear. The owner didn't even know it. He was told it was a 4 speed when he bought it and never knew the difference. By the way, "scrambler1" I never mentioned anything about fuel mileage, so I have no idea why you even said that. I was concerned about a botched homemade tranny changeover or worse. Thanks everyone.

glad you have it figured out, i was thinking it may have had a 4 spd, jeep had 4 spd ax4 transmissions in early comanche's. it was the same as the ax5 just w/ 4 speeds, and could be made into a 5 spd.

but you just have a bad ax5, welcome to the club.
