400 chevy in yj?

It's a far off idea...but there's a 72 suburban with a 400 sitting in it in my barn..and on the off chance I could fix that engine, it could be interesting to put it in my 94 2.5 if and when the old 4banger dies..which it will eventually I'm sure. 205K on it, it's still got a lot of life to it, runs amazingly smooth..but it will go eventually. I've heard though, that the 400's have a problem with overheating and cracking the head...But if it turns out to not be a complete rebuild to get it working (yeah right) it could be alot cheaper than buying another engine.. Thoughts on that? I know small block chevy's are fairly compatible...but also it comes down to what new transmission and axles would be required.

as stated heat is a big issue with v8's in wranglers... as for the swap.. axle's would be needed as well. what does the suburban have?

I've heard they had problems in the actual original vehicle. As for axle...I haven't found any information on that really. Closest I found was with parts train, I don't really understand anything about axles though, anything I know about cars is trial and error, and as I haven't messed with axles yet.. :P This is what parts train says about the replacement for the 6.6L version, which comes out to 402, so I'm just assuming they made an rounded it to 6.6L instead of 6.556 or whatever it comes out to. 8-3/4'', 8-78'' Dia ring gear 30 spline. That's all I've got..if that equates to anything, it's beyond me.

For a little more information on it; It's a 1972 suburban with the "california package", one of the first and only to get this package. The problem with that is it makes any information on it rare. For the most part, I don't believe they put the 400's in 71-72 suburbans. But I Can't find axle information even on the regular suburbans of the era.

Is that 400 the small or big block? Chevy did both in that timeframe but I don't remember what they were putting in (or give an option for) in the suburbans.

If its the big block, I don't know if it'll fit??

That's basically the problem I'm having, some infortmation on them..but nothing mentioning axles, especially for the 400. And to answer your question, this 400 is the small block.

It's at my mothers, but next time I'm over there I'll borrow a digital camera and get some pictures. (I really should invest in one of those..)
