4WD indicator light on dash ?

Is there a light that indicates 4WD ? I see the gauge by my speedometer light up once 4WD but flashed off quickly yet it was still in 4WD ????

Mine does the same thing. It will stay for a couple min then turn off. I try to ignore it but it still bugs me knowing something might be going wrong.

Unless you have done the Mod the 4x4 light is activated by the vacuum moter engaging the axle.

I just don't know if it's supposed to remain on, 4WD works still when it's off

The way the 4wd works is, there is a rod that your shift fork in your Vacuum shift housing, when that rod is forced to slide over it moves the fork and locks the axle in. At the same time it connects to a switch that goes to your dash light.

If you read the stickeys there is a mod for the shift motor to eliminate the vacuum lines, and one for a new 4wd switch after that.

Good evening guys. Commenting on this because my girl just bought a YZ and is having this problem. The transfer case says that it is in 4 wheel drive. Taking a sharp turn reveals what I didn't test hard enough during the test drive. It is stuck in 4 wheel drive. Even when making sure that the transfer case is set in 2H. I have a 99 tj and do not have this problem nor do the TJ axles have that vacuum portion I have noticed. What could possibly be the problem and any body have any links or ideas?

The 4WD light should stay on while your Jeep is in 4-wheel drive (hi or low). If it is intermittent, then there is probably a short in your wiring somewhere.
If the light goes out, it doesn't necessarily mean that your 4wd isn't working ... if the transfer case lever is still in the 'engaged' mode.

What year YJ do you have? Up until 90 the 4wd indicator light is vacuum operated with the switch on the firewall. 91 and above the switch for the 4wd light is at the driver's side end of the vacuum actuator and it's electrical.

Disregard. After 2 years it's probably fixed.

This is 2H I'm talking about. It's stuck in 4wd while the lever on the transfer case appears to be correctly position for 2H

mine stays on because the switch on the diff is re tapped and it doesnt go in far enough to push the button, just ignore it. as long as the front wheels pull your fine

if its stuck in 4wd then make sure the shifter linkage bolts are tight, just had to tighten mine up because it got really sloppy, like how an old toyota manual tranny feels, sloppy

if its just the light ignore it
