4wd not engaging

So today I took my 88 yj out for the first time, ran great however when we tried the 4x4 the light would not come one. The drive shaft would spin however the front tires would not spin. anyone know what could be the issue?

It sounds like the same ol vacuum problem everyone has. Its probaly the vac actuator on the axle. Your going to need to pull it apart and put a spring in it to lock the fork in place at all times. It doesnt have any neg affects on it.

There should be one line from the vacuum switch that doesn't go to anything, it's the vent. On my '95 it hangs by the battery, not sure if an '88 would be in the same place, the systems are just a bit different. Your switch for your indicator light should be by the battery as well.

Gama, ol' buddy, seems like you got your hands full with that 88YJ, what with the 4WD and the electrical problems...welcome to jeeping........the good news is that when you fix these problems, you'll know ALOT more about the jeep....FYI, might want to spend 20 bucks on a Haynes manual.....you'll use it more than once, guaranteed...
