4WD Not working: Newbie questions

OK, just got my '89 YJ, I6, 5 speed. Runs OK, drives fine, but the 4WD doesn't work. First, it seems like I can only shift into 2H and 4L. It definitely goes into low range, but the front doesn't engage. Had it up on jack stands tonight, when I shift the 4WD shifter into the low range, the front driveshaft spins but doesn't turn the front wheels. I don't have a lot of jeep or 4WD experience, so I don't know if the actual engagement is just at the front end case or not. Any help is appreciated.

Check and make sure you have vacuum at the front.

third on the hose and if its not the hose than its probably the shift motor itself.

run your self a vacumm line from a port in the engine compartment down to the shift motor, on my 90 yj the port to lock the hubs is the longer one the runs parrel to the jeep if you can understand that. and see if that will lock then in. you might have a broken vacum line

that's a great idea, much better than some of the ones I've had so far! I'll try that tomorrow.

THANKS!

I had problems with this on my '92 as well. mine acted like it would engage just a little bit and if I gassed it it would grind and pop. There are a couple bushings I replaced ( one in the axle tube that holds the short shaft from the diff to the disconnect, and one in the end of the outer axel ) and I swapped out the shift fork from aluminum to cast iron. this took care of all my problems.

the shift motor is a pretty simple mechanism so if it boils down to it, it wont be hard to go in and fix or replace it

thanks to all for your help. I ran a vac line down to the shift motor and got it to go into 4WD. I then hooked everything back up as normal and got it to shift in and out of 4WD fine a few times. It even found 4 high which seemed to be non-existant earlier. Something must have been stuck and running a strong vac line directly to it freed it up. I'll still try to get the the root cause of the problem but at least I know it's not a huge problem. Thanks to all for your help!

well I have recently dealt with this same issue all I can say is POSI LOCK!!!! mine was doing the pop in and out thing as well, and not working all the time. I was rebuilding the front differential anyways due to a sloppy pinion bearing, so while in there I installed the posi lock and a new shift fork. It works wonderfully I highly recommend it. -Aaron-

Is this a normal occurece with the older jeeps? I have a '94 and noticed last year I had problems with engaging the 4x4 but mostly with the low gear.

My girl has been very good to me. I had a bad oil leak, seized locks, a lock box that sometimes 'forgets' to unlock, so it figures it would be something silly like this.
