4wd stick poping out

One day i was jeeping and i was bottoming out on some logs. When i was done i went to put my jeep yj np 231 tc into 2wd and the shifter just came right out so i realized i can manually pull the linkage back into 2wd with my hands to get home. When i got home i tried to put the stick shift on and it slid down on the bar but it will just pull off when i pull it back to 4wd low. Is there a lock or do i have to press it or something to get the stick back onto the transfer case linkage bar. On it not pop off again? In this picture the 4wd stick is pressed on as far as i can get it but i just lifts right off any suggestions to what i can do to rig it or a cheap fix?

Did you ever get your TC shifter fixed? I believe what you might need is the spring clip that fits up inside your shifter stick and locks on the TC stub when you push it on. Not sure what it is called, but I had to replace one on one of my YJs a couple of years ago. It is a flat thin clip.

I'd be interested in hearing about the fix also, I've got the same problem.

Hey Dad, I've look at the pdf repair manual & don't see the clip you're talking about. Can you offer any more advice?

Mine is a 91, 6cyl, 5 speed.

It dosen't look like it would do anything just looking at it. When mine broke/seperated, I tried everything to fix the broken one and finally just bought a replacement. There is a trick to placing it up inside your shifter stick prior to pushing it down on the stub. I forgot where I bought mine but it came with directions. Good luck if this is the problem.

Mine did that and I just slammed it back on and it stayed stuck and now doesn't come apart anymore!

Thanks Dad (I refuse to call you Daddy) & Cakes.

I found the parts yesterday in the pdf manual & at Morris 4x4 center online. I'll probably order the parts today.

If anyone is interested, the online manual here at NP 231 Transfer Case Parts for Wrangler TJ, YJ, Cherokee XJ, Grand Cherokee ZJ at Morris 4x4 has much clearer pics & printing. I guess I'll be going there from now on to look at the manual.

Hey Dad, I just read the instructions for the clip install & that guy seems purdy cool & helpful. My first thought would be to insert the new clips into the lever, but his way worked better. Guess I'll find out.

Thanks again for the help Dad.
