4wd won't work in the cold

i got the car about two years ago, and i never had this problem until this winter. but when I put it into 4 wheel drive, the light doesn't come on and the 4wd will not engage. It works when it is warm out: this only happens when its like below 30 degrees out or something, and it doesn't start working after the engine warms up. i have already tried checking the connections on the passenger side of the front axle, and they are nice and clean. but that is all i know how to do. so if anyone knows what to do, i could really use the help. Thanks

how does the inner axle look? sludge build-up? the wrong lube? some semi-automatic rifles have the same problem in extreme cold.

My problem with this was the shift boot gets too shift and actually tries to pull the lever out of gear.
