4X4 light on when in 2WD

New yj owner. so i am thinking it must be a vacuum line came off or something right? i am not sure where to look tho. it shifts in and out fine just the light doesnt turn off. not a huge issue just thought i would fix it.

My guess would be that there is an external switch somewhere on the transfer case that has failed or is out of adjustment or the wiring hooked to it has a problem.

I'd get underneath and look around the transfer case especially by the shift linkage.

I might not even be on the right track, but that's where I'd start.

If it goes off when in 4WD, the vacuum line going to the disconnect is on backwards.

no, it stays on when its in 4wd and 2wd

The indicator light switch can be in one of two places.
Older models have a vacuum actuated switch on the firewall next to the battery. One vacuum line and two wires.
Newer models have a switch on the cad actuator that is mechanically actuated by the cad shift-fork rod. Two wires on the drivers side (opposite the vacuum lines) in the cad housing on the passenger side front axle tube.

If it is anything like my old cherokee (I'm not sure) Someone may have possibly completed the D30 posi conversion, and never removed the vacuum hose. But like I said, not too privy on the older YJ 4x4 systems.

I did it to my cherokee, all you do is take the shift fork assembly off of the axle. remove one of the C clips off of the shaft inside of it, move the fork over to the locked position, and re-install the C clip in the same spot on the shaft. It will now be on the opposite side of the shift fork, holding it in the locked position. Next step is to slide the collar on the 2 piece front axle into the locked position. which is at the point in which the two axle halves meet. Basically it is like driving around with your hubs always in, but much less abrasive on your hardware. You are still fully able to drive in 2wd, but your 4wd is only a lever pull away. Much more reliable that vacuum 4x4. The thing is! like I said. I am not sure if this is the case with the YJ wrangler. Hope this helps!

A good way to tell is to have someone look at your front driveshaft while you are rolling. (make sure you are in 2wd) If it spins, it is likely this has been done to it.
