5th gear gone.

I was driving home from work today and lost 5th. It seemed like it just popped out of gear, but the shifter was still in the 5th position, just nothing there. It shifts through all the other gears just fine. Any ideas?

btw, it's a 1995 2.5

Have had this happen twice on the 2.5 with the ax5 tranny. The snap ring that keeps the fifth gear in place breaks and the fifth gear slides out of position on the output shaft. The first time I pulled the tranny and had a shop fix it, cost about $200. Second time I made the repair myself, a lot of work, but the snap ring only cost $5.00.

Nice, thanks. Now all I have to do is hunt down and throttle the previous owner that welded the skid plate on rather than extract and replace some broken bolts. I've dreaded the day I would have to address that issue.

Hey chezuki... Do like I did, just put 33's on it... You'll never need 5th gear again!

thats exactly it, fifth gear likes to take a walk. some times the rest of the trans starts to go, or you might be able to go a long time with no fifth.

mine did the same thing about a week or two after I bought it. 5th just went completely out on me driving down the highway. Drove around on 4 gears for a couple of months then the whole thing started going out. From what Ive read the ax5 sucks and the guy who decided to put it in should be shot and beaten. Seem stupid to put another ax5 in or do a rebuild. So since I had a ax15 laying around I started that swap and will hopefully finish it this weekend.
