8.8 or d44

im ready to replace my rear axle and i keep getting told to go with one or the other so what is your opinion and why? i would like it to bolt right in and still use my same wheels. also what gears are in a 8.8 and a d44?

I'd go 8.8, 8.8 is a little stronger. They come in 3.73 and 4.10 as is, but you can get much lower if needed. I know ECG has up to at least 4:88's. Many also come with an LSD already installed.

Assuming you're in a YJ, definitely the 8.8. Nearly the same size WMS to WMS, same bolt pattern, more stout than the 44, and very common (and usually cheaper).

Which ever one you get a better deal on, they are both good axles. both have tons of aftermarket support.

Another vote for the 8.8. As posted above, they are more common and thus easier to find. I plan on upgrading my rear axle over the summer and will be going with the 8.8.

thanks for the help i am leaning more for the 8.8 am i going to have to relocate the shock mounts on the axle on a 8.8 or a d44?

Shock mounts
Spring perches
Brake hookup
Drive shaft (make sure you get the yoke from the donor)

Pretty easy swap.

Get one from a 95-00 or 01. They have disk brakes. The only real con is the pressed in axle tubes, but that is easily fixed, and only a real problem with bigger tires.

If its a limited slip, it will say 3L73 or 4L10 or whatever the gears are. Where does it say D at?

on the stanf 8.8 swap he said i found this beauty with 4.10 and lsd maby he ment limited slip diff? even under his info it says 8.8 with lsd
