Talking 83 SBC 350 Build Help!

Hey WF I prolly went in over my head on this one but im in no rush becuse My 4.0 works fine right now So i figured I'd get started on My 350 that hopefully someday will be under the hood! Im driving tomorrow to pick Up a 83 SBC 350 Complete from carb to pan with starter. The guy has It on a Running stand so thats always good! he says it has 73,000 original miles. Im going to get this whole engine built before I worry about tranny's adapters and all that goodness. So I guess what Im asking is.. What Do you think Are some good/necessary mods to do? Im on a tight budget so I want to Take my time and get deals. I dont need anything with crazy power! just somthing that will get me up those hills and spin tires in the mud a lil more vigorously then my 4.0.. I'm planning on going the Carb route because of the expense.. If im going to get one very good thing for the engine it will be the Carb becuse I dont want it flooding out on me. What are your guyses experiences? I know there has to be a ton of threads on here about this And i will read every link you give me.

Drop that puppy in as is! One hot wire from the key switch to the HEI distributor will bring it to life[besides the starter]The quadrajet carbs work fine off road.

x2. Since you have the 4.0 currently, you don't even have to worry about relocating the motor mounts.

Not sure if the manifolds you got will clear the fire wall.Once you get it positioned in the frame you will know.GM made a few variances of their manifolds since 1955 so options are available. The early 60's ramhorn style was a center output..I ran a set of 70's manifolds upside down flipped on my '74 mustang II mud Traw

hold up... The 4.0 mounts will work with a 350? I was under the impression that I was going to have to cut off the stock ones and weld on new ones in a different spot? And sounds good on the manifolds.. As far as keeping it all stock and just bolting it up.. How much will the stock carb take ? as far as angles? I guess we'll see! not to hard to put in a Different carb when the 350 is in the jeep im guessing. Thanks guys

Your stock harness will work fine. Things that need power will be:

Distributor - Needs to be a wire that only has power when the key is in the on position. There should be a wire like that already hooked to the coil. As well as your tach wire. [On the coil wire make sure it has 12v, I have seen some posts talking about coil wire only having 9v becuase of a inline resister]

Starter - Which is basically the same so it will just be switching wires. Battery Power, Seliniod wire which only has power when the key is in the start position, ground. This should be a direct swap. [my starter sel. wire is green]

Alternator - Needs Charging wire to the Battery, Power wire to the distiburtion block, and Energizer wire to a wire that is only hot when the key is in the run position. Im not sure about your year wranglers alternator but this might be a direct swap item as well. Meaning your plug for your old alt. might just go into your new one.

Choke - 1 positive, negative wire thats hot when the key is in the run postition.

Ok So i just brought Home the 350. It has the entire stock Wiring harness on the motor already. Has all of the radiator hoses/ fuel lines.. Pretty much everything! How do I get that harness to plug into my YJ? is there a convertor? Or do I have to splice everything?

It ran great didn't skip a beat. Seams like It's a Little dirty. Some oil buildup. I might put new gaskets in.

Sounds like you got a good deal. An RV cam would be a plus for more low torque, and a set of decent headers if the stock manifolds will not work (headers are cheaper than you may think)
Do away with the mechanical fan, and if the Quadrajet is working good, then use it. This will save you some money. Carbs aren't very cheap these days. All this can be done for cheap. As far as the motor being dirty, I would worry about that unless you do a re-build. Y9u can clean it eaasily with some degreaser, just don't let water or degreaser get into the carb or exhaust. A carb'd engine is easy to wire as already stated

One thing to think of though....a stock carb'd 350 doesn't have much power or torque (if any) over the 4.0 H.O.
Most didn't have quite 200 H.P. However, the awesome thing is that you can get a lot more out of a 350, and this can be done a little at a time on a budget

I wasnt planning on doing anything to It because I dont know how to tune a carb or anything and was told that The cam carb and headers all had to work with eachother. If i put in a diffrent cam will I need to re tune the carb? Headers? I've never taken apart a engine so.. Putting in a new cam scares me! Got a link to thoes parts so i can check em out??

Save your dollars for the install. Honestly the only money I would put into before install is Degreeser, and maybe a set of headman headers[about 175$]. Specially if your Jeep is a daily driver.

If you go with the TH350 trans, make sure to call the manufacture and get the proper torque converter. They start at 100bucks and move up from there depending on your application. I would plan on spending 200 to 350 on a TC.

I think these are the headers im using.

now Im looking for a th 350. Do i have to get it within a certain year of my engine? Heres a few I found close to my area. Let me know what you would do.

350 turbo transmission REBUILT with shift kit - $400 This is a 350 turbo transmission that is a short shaft transmission with a shift kit installed and it has the heavy duty steel clutches. This transmission fits the 1987 or earlier cars or trucks that are non electronic, and it does not have overdrive. this will work in cars or trucks. We can install this transmission for you for an extra cost. 400.00 cash.

Chevy 350 Turbo Tranny Bolt Up And Go - $175

Good Tranny Pulled from 83 silverado...about 10,000 mi. on rebuld (tc. too). wrecked the front end scrapped truck and sold motor. Tranny still good. O.B.O

Early 80s Chevy engines weren't the best, your better off usign that block and converting it to TBI, TBI is simple, and WAY more reliable then any carburetor.

You will need to remove ALL your Jeep computer stuff, Sorry, but they are not compatible.

The bellhousing is what matters, its what bolt pattern you need to match to your block. When you clean your engine up there should be a casting number. That will be a wealth of information about where what and how your engine.

Also make sure your getting a 4x4 tranny or the tailhousing will be wrong.

EFE, it blocks off or restricts one exhaust at the header to re-route the exhaust through the intake to help warm up. Basically an emissions device that was a bad idea before it was thought up.

Remove it, its such an outdated item, and has a high a failure rate.
