87 YJ Key won't turn ...

Wheels are slightly turned to the right, so I think the steering is locked. I tryed jacking it up and manually moving the wheels, .... and that is not the answer. It's making me crazy! Anyone have a simple solution? I was advised to start with checking the ignition switch, .....

When I had this problem with my 89 it was the ignition switch. Replaced it and no further problems.

My 94 does this and all I do is wiggle steering wheel back and forth while turning the key and it starts

OK. So I just picked up the Haynes Jeep Repair Manual. I'm not a mechanic, .... yet! I guess I start by diconnecting the battery, .... Just a thought, but are ignition switches easy to come by if I need one?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried this with and with 3 different keys and have had no results... although the steering column seems a bit loose now.

Do you have the correct key? Have you ever srated it with the keys you have? When redrider94 siad "wiggle the steering wheel", he didnt mean tear it up, just light pressure back and forth. Could be light pressure on the locking pin. Ignition switches are easy to come by. Before you go off buying things try this, pull the switch out and then try and turn the key.

While you have the switch out, bench test it. See if it slides properly.

Yes, two of the keys are original American Motors keys, and one is an Ace re-cut. Gentle movements and wiggling, not aggressive, just prolonged. I respect this vehicle. I've had it since 1990. I actually am more fond of it than my new Jeep. I've just never worked on it myself. Been looking at youtube how to's, also. I need some tools and courage.
