87 yj stopped cranking starter clicks.

this is my first jeep and I bought it last night. This morning I wake up and I drive it around the block and check vacuum lines when I got back. a new remanufactured carter carburetor was installed and still needs to be tuned. anyway on the way home it started bogging out on me and I found the choke was not set correctly opening all the way. so I had taken the air cleaner off took a piece of wire and wired it open so I can get it home and it ran fine. after cranking it 5 times and running around the block this morning I decided to check the vacuum lines and set the timing to make sure everything is correct. based off of an instruction online I had taken the vacuum line of the distributor and disconnected the 3 prong wire on the fire wall. I then set the timing to 8 and turned off the motor. I reconnected the vacuum to the distributor and the 3 prong wire on firewall . I did notice that the timing set at 8 degrees was definitely seem to be more advanced looking at the distributer than it was before. I go to crank the motor after reconnecting the vacuum and 3 prong wires on the firewall and all I got was a starter click would not crank whatsoever. it did not seem the motor turned at all but it almost seem like I could have seized the crank I just do not know if that is possible . I did try jumping the jeep battery from my other vehicle and it did not work . on the battery inside it says I am getting 8 volts but when jumped from my corvette it seem like it would gradually rise while it was jumped in the corvette was running. I try putting a socket on the crank bolt and could not turn the motor although that could of been compression holding it back. I did hit the starter on a little bit to see if that was warmed up and seized but I only still got 1 click from the starter went running the key. I did not check the battery terminals which I will do when I get home. Any ideas? Is it posiible to have messed up the timing enough to have seized the motor somehow even if it didn't turn over?

It sounds like you only have a bad battery. Double check the connections first. If it's still the same I would say it's the battery. Any battery under 11 volts isn't going to crank that's why your starter is clicking. You don't have enough juice. If the battery is real bad, dead cells etc., you can't jump start. Get a new battery.

KIK is right. It's more likely you don't have good connection to the starter from the battery or the solenoid on the starter is toast. You shouldn't be able to turn the motor over by hand because of compression. Changing the timing too far one way or the other will only make the engine not start or diesel. No way changing the timing will seize the engine. Check your battery, battery connections and solenoid.

I know when its cold mine freezes, normally smack it while wife starts it. Then starts fine after that. 1 or 2 light taps most likely free it up
