87 YJ weird stalling issue

Ok I have owned various jeep models my whole life. My newest project is an 87 YJ . It is an automatic and when shifting into any gear from park or neutral the ignition cuts out and stalls the rig. I'm baffled by this I think it cod be a short some where in the steering column but I havnt torn it apart yet. Has any one run into this issue.
