88 4.2l 5spd / popping out of low range

I just purchased this 1988 yj 4.2l 5spd stock jeep, when I put into low range and drive straight forward after about 10-20 yards their is a very loud snap, and it wiggles the jeep sounds and feels like the transfer case area and then starts /popping/snapping sound untill you switch back into 2wd or 4high then can get back to normall, It seems to not happen if I hold back on the 4x4 shifter very hard back presure I can keep it from doing it...
questions are what would cause t his, could it be just a adjusment on the rod, internal? Im sure if I keep letting it happen it will certainly break something it is very violent sp? when it happens. Any help would be appreciated and I was not on pavement. Thanks

No lift that i can see, looks like the shackles might be longer than stock but that wouldnt affect the linkage i dont think should i adjust the slidder on the rod forward you think to give it a bit more throw into low.

anything is worth a try but it sounds like you are gonna have to go thru the transfer case. the shith fork pads play a big roll inside of the case if they wear out then the gears can move around an not stay in place an allow it to pop like that

10mm wrench needed under the driver side (under the Jeep) transfer case. The Hi-Lo shift slider. Lock it down.

Just a guess?
