88 lift questions.

First post and ............hello.
I have an 88 yj and i am getting close to putting new rubber on it.The gearing is stock as is the suspension.I think i am headed toward putting either 30x9.5x15 or the 31x10.5. the jeep will have a hard top, big heavy re8000 ramsey, spare gas can holder/spare tire ,and full steel doors.so the rig is heavier than stock.Question is: what would be the optimum lift height to run 31" tires without issues with this weight.would add a leafs give me what i am looking for? rig is used for mild trail use only.
thank's

I would think 2.5 would be plenty and not cause you other issues....check in the FAQ. There is a lot of info in there.....

I agree with the 2.5" lift. I would stay away from the add a leaf as it tends to ride rough. If you still have the stock springs they well due to be replaced.

I run a 2-1/2" RE lift with 31's. No clearance problems at all. OR Fab tire carrier w/ 2 gas cans & hi'lift, Full roof safari rack, Warn bumber and ME8000 winch. Still able to do mild trails with ease and run her down the freeway to work once in a while.

You don't have to lift it to run 31 10.5's. These guy will try to sell you on all kinds of mods if you let them. I drive an 88 YJ with Congo cage and 4 x 6 roof basket fully loaded with camping gear, gas and water, two adults and three dogs on 31 10.5's. All I have ever done is put Auto Zone add a leaf on the rear original springs and trimmed the flares about 1/2". Runs fine on backroads and offroad. You don't want to try driving over tree stumps or boulders anyway unless you have a pocketfull of throwaway money.

GrandpaJeeper has a good point. I ran 31's on my jeep for a while without the lift as well. If you are really pushing it off road you might get some rubbing, but for moderate use you may be ok with the stock suspension. A 1" body lift or lift shackles will give you that little bit of extra clearance to eliminate the rubbing. A lift is great and everyone should have one, but you might not need one right away.

Friend of mine just bought the 4" Rough Country kit for his 91. Getting installed now. Says the price was great.

Hey,

I have a 1989, and I just put the 4WD Hardware 2" lift on it and BFG 30x9.5 AT's....love the ride, and the combo of lift/tires...email me for pics if interested....

The lift actually got me 3", I am sure due to the OEM springs were proabably going flat.....

I've heard a lot of people are happy with the 4WD Hardware lifts.

Prior to buying the 4wd kit (which was the lowest $$$ of all the mild kits), I called them, it seems that thier springs are mfg by BDS for them, so the quality is there...

I like my lift, strong, military wrap springs, all the hardware was there for the whole job....Ubolts, relocation brakcets for brakes and trackbar, shims, etc...etc....
