'88 Low miles/what to do

Hey all-

Long time lurker here on the forum that just came across a garage queen (or so it seems).

It is an 88 YJ w/62K that the original owner used as a second home car up in the mts here in CO. That owner had it from 0 miles drove it from NJ to CO and used it during his stays out west. That guy traded it in on a new Rubicon to the Jeep dealership in town at 59K. The current owner purchased it last Oct and is selling due to a new job (whatever). Here are some stats the owner says: 2.5L, 4 cylinder. Great exterior and interior. New tires and rims, new belts, spark plugs, battery. 5 speed manual transmission. Hardtop with ski rack. Excellent driving. No leaks. He had it at $7K and already dropped to $6500. So the question begs- $6500 to do it or not and what are the obvious needs to this Jeep. I have to travel 200 miles to see it. Thumbs up or down..... pros/cons......Thanks in advance!

Sounds pretty nice but I don't know the market to give any advice about price.

The 2.5 manual transmission has its limitations so it really depends what you want to use it for. If your plan is to list it and put oversize tires on it your looking at the wrong Jeep. If you want a decent ride take a look.

X2.

For another grand or so you could get a TJ with more features AND a 4.0 L!!! If I could have a YJ with 60K miles or a TJ with 100K miles (assuming both were taken care of), I'd still take the TJ in a heartbeat! Just my two cents

I'm with you. I think it is overpriced. I would say 5k max. Even tho it has low miles its still really old. For a couple grand more you could have a really nice 4.0 TJ. If you really want a YJ tell him 5k cash and that's it.

A.... no such thing as a nice "TJ" IMHO........

B.... YJs can be had for $1-4K ALL the time........I bought mine for $1200 4 years ago.

C..... people LIE all the time about "who owned it and for how long"......

D.......These things rust "sitting still"...... unless you KNOW what to look for this thing could have rust issues you cannot see with the naked eye (25 years old is OLD where vehicles are concerned)

E.... if you do not already KNOW Jeeps..... odds are you should not be paying PREMIUM prices for them.

I'll agree with you on B-E. on A, I have a nice TJ!!

I also just sold my 93 YJ with 130K miles for $4,500. And that was within 24 hours of posting it on CL. Just depends where you live and the condition it's in.

I agree with you. The biggest thing is the area, some areas have a higher demand for the wranglers. Weird but thats how it is. Just keep your eyes peeled on CL and find a decent looking one for under 4k.

Thanks guys- see what he says. I wasn't planning on big tires- I think he has 30's on there now, only thing maybe a small lift to get it up over those just a bit. I would use this mainly as a summer fun car w/my 4Runner as the winter get me through.

In this economy.... I'd play hardball with them. Offer them something really low, the worst they can say is no. If they do, walk, you'd be surprised how many times you get a phone call back. I think it's too high as currently priced.

+1 - priced way too high. I see it quite often in the local for sale postings too. The guy probably overpaid to the dealer, and is trying to recoup his purchase price.

Parts deteriorate due to age and miles, and a car sitting for 6 months out of the year isn't exactly good either. Much better to be run regularly.

I would also tell you to buy a 6 cyl. You won't regret getting the 4.0L engine, but you may regret buying the 2.5L.
