88 Wrangler Gears

I purchased a 88 Wrangler Laredo, never had one, guy used it for trail riding and some mudding. It seems to be geared low, 2100RPM @ 55 MPH and 8 MPG. I would like to gear it for highway and some beach driving use. I know that both axles have DANA stamped on them. The front has a date of 1985 and the rear is dated 1987. Whats your advise? Thanks!

Thanks for the info guys. Stopped by the guy I purchased Wrangler for to see if He knew what the gearing is. He said that he never touched it when he bought it but that he did have the engine rebuilt with it bored out .030. It does run good!

Depends on the year of your vehicle. Mines a 87 and there's nothing in the computer systems anymore about it. Only like where it's made and stuff nothing on gearing or specs like that. Iv gone to dealers and even talked to mopar

What tires you have on it? My jeep is right about 2100rpm with 35s and 4.56 gears... thats how it was with my 33s too. the 8mpg sounds like a big problem tho.

88 Wranglers Gears

I just put a set of 30/ 10.5/15 on it. It had a set of Thornburg mud tire on it that were the same size. They would beat you to death on the road, besides the roar. People could hear you a mile away coming down the road, would get strange stares as you go by. They were great offroad though
