Have you checked for a CLOGGED Exhaust System?

It will be Noisy, but you can disconnect it at the down tube, test drive down the street,
and SEE if it's the same. If it changes, replace muffler or Cat, and the Cat would be
my first guess, as it's most likely Orig.
The above is just something to eliminate that doesn't cost $$$$, but can a will cause
the issue you describe.

It could be a clogged cat, but it also could be the Ignition Control Module. Once it heats up it could start to fail which you would start to lose spark and feel like the symptoms you are describing. For about 70$ I would replace it. Since it's an 88 it's going to have to be replaced anyway.

Ugh I have a thread about this too.. I'd b cruising and all of a sudden it sputters like running out of gas. It doesn't always do it cause I took it to mechanic three times and they can't duplicate the symptom so I look dumb. It does it on the street too.. It's frustrating! I replaced fuel filter, and they check spark plugs cables and whatnot

That sounds like a rev limiter. I don't even know where or if there is one on the jeeps.

I noticed this comment:
Go buy an product to clean the connector of the TB sensor. I only cleaned the connector and the problem went away :p
If it doest work, go buy new TB sensor

Your eng. lights not on though is it?

Sounds like the float in the carb is sticking and it is starving the motor!! When the motor dies stop and look down in the throat of the carb and open up the throttlle a couple of times and see if it's squirting gas down the throat, there should be 2 streams of gas shooting down into the carb when you open the throttle!! If not the bowl of the carb is empty and the float is stickin or just out of adjustment!! If that helps any!!
