I have an '89 yj 4.2L automatic. The orange wire from the ignition switch shorted out or something and melted the insulation off and also baddly damaged the red wire that is next to it. I looked at my parts jeep and it had done the same thing, so I took both harnesses and created one good one. Then I looked under the hood and found that it did not just burn up two wires, like it did under the dash, but had actually burned about half the wires in the engine harness.
First off, is it possable that the ignition switch caused this(I took the switch apart and its fine inside)? The red wire comes from the terminal thing next to the battery with all the fusible links (I have no idea what it is called) to the fuse block to the ignition. the orange wire comes from the ignition to the fuse block to a splice that from what i can tell goes to the relays next to the battery, other than the ignition switch I don't know what else could do this.
Second the only replacement harness I can find is painless but it is the whole harness for the jeep and costs $864. Does anybody know of any others, and no they do not have wranglers in the salvage yards here. They do have alot of cherokees but i don't know that that will work, will it? Someone on here has one that has had a nutter bypass done to it but I am a little sketchy on whether I want to do that, wouldn't I need to replace other things if I do a nutter.
