Have an 89 yj 4.2 manual. won't rev past 2500. Rebuilt the carter carb 0-2681. Did the nutter bypass and team rush mod. No matter what I do it's still there. I'm thinking carb I here a lot of bad news about the carter carbs but surely there is a way to make it work. Everything is set up via instructions with the carb kit. Still nothing has improved. Help!!
Do you know how much total advance you have? I put an hei unit with vacumm advance on my yj. My carb has no throttle vacumm port.all I have is the mechanical advance. I set initial timing at 12 degrees btdc and total advance is around 28 degrees. That seems low but it runs fine. I generally never rev past 2800 rpm.
When I bought my yj it had a Weber carb. I didn't care for it.I have never seen the factory carb so I don't know anything to tell you on it. I have a 500 Holley on it now though it is a fresh 4.6 now. I think you may have an ignition type problem.good luck.
Thanks for the response man.
I do not know what my overall timing is. How would I go about figuring that out? My guess would be to put vacuum to the vacuum advance and then look at it with a timing light? I have also been told to go Holley 500 or mc 2100. I did notice that when there is a heavy load on the electronics end like head light radio on the tach wants to jump up I didn't notice it affecting the engine rom though. Any help would be much appreciated. I did adjust the metering rods to factory spec and also the acc pump. I get get almost 3000 rooms now but it still stumbles but now at 3000. I'm not trying to red line it but it would be nice to have that extra rpm range when it's needed.
Well I figured out how to adjust the vac advance. It was replaced by PO and I don't think they set it correctly. I can get up to 3200 rpm now. Thanks for the help and pointing me in the right direction.
No problem.fyi I use an adjustable timing light.glad I could help
