89 yj won't start...Has fuel and spark

Hi guys! Maybe you can help me out here. Our 89 yj (4cyl fi 5 speed) up until yesterday ran and started every day. Got in to go to the store and it started but shut off got it started again and down the block and it just quit and wouldn't start again. It'll crank all day and night but it just will not start. It does have spark and it does have fuel. Hubby said he's not sure if it has a crank position sensor. Any help? I want my jeep back!!! Also if it helps any the fuel pump and filter have been replaced within the last year. Thanks in advance

thanks guys! Wish we could pull codes but have no scan tool to do so. Guess this gives reason to buy one huh? lol They've been trying to fix it all day basically and know it is getting fuel out of the lines but not to the injector. So we're gonna try and hunt down an injector for it and see how it goes.

I'm sorry Navychief, I read scan and thought to myself, yeah don't have one of those...lol Will it also work with a 89? Granted the check engine light actually works...I seen it said from 91 to 95. BTW That's a nice renegade! And what I'd eventually like to get. Wish I had 3800 dollars. Someone in our area has had one for sale for the past 4 months. Duane, yes they did check the timing.

Well we made some progress towards getting the yj running. Bought a new fuel pump cause we had no fuel at all. Put it in to find out we had no power at all to the pump. Ran a new hot wire and sure enough the fuel pump kicked on. Relays are working and we're getting fuel into the throttle body now. But still won't start so now we're leaning towards the injector.

Found the culprit as to why my yj is not running. After replacing the map, cps, fuel pump, fuel filter, injector, icm, it is the ecm. Just out of curiosity and to check for burnt up circuits I took it out today. Turned it over to take it apart and it started dripping water. We had it running a few days ago...hopefully once the ecm gets a chance to dry out it'll work again. If not time for a new one. It got wet due to a rip in the rubber between the windshield and the body. Time to replace that now too.

just for my info, did you try getting the codes with the key? nice info to know for future ref. thanks on the renegade coment. i first saw one in 95 on the showroom floor. $18,000 and some change. too steep for my blood. i had to scoop this one up for $3400. all original and working.

No I couldn't pull the codes. It has no check engine light. Emissions light yes, Check engine no. Just opened the computer and it's BAD. Someone at one time must have tried to "fix it" and the wax overcoating actually was so wet that it's sitting all inside the bottom cover. No drying it out. A few connections are corroded and a few are actually burnt and missing. There's someone in my area that has one for sale for 3800 as well. Been watching that bad boy. Hope he's still got it come income tax...lol

Check that thread, I got an awesome PCM for $235... Piece of cake to change. Be sure to call them and get the right one for your jeep if thats the route you want to go.
