Have a leaking valve cover. I tried a replacement plastic one with a rubber gasket and with RTV. It looks like the new aftermarket one isn't seating on the exhaust side. Not sure if I can repair the cracks in the original.
Does anyone know of any aluminum valve covers from other models/years that will at least match up to the head and bolt holes?
You should have a metal one.. I have like 5 out in scrap pile and all of them fit the same and came from various years... only difference would be the PVC system and maye a baffle or 2... But try a year or 2 newer..
Went to Autozone for a 95 gasket. . . It may work with the new plastic one(holes/channel contours are the same). I may buy a used aluminum one on ebay or something. I work at a machine shop so with some planning maybe I can modify a newer model one to fit up the same. It's also a good excuse to buy a tool or two that I've been wanting.
Well. . . what I don't understand is why the aftermarket industry hasn't come up with an aluminum replacement. The plastic replacement doesn't line up without the bolts being started. I also think the mating surface on the cover isn't actually flat.
The plastic ones used a soft, pre applied seal that cures when heated. Usually, if you use a normal gasket they will leak, and then crack when tightened more. Using RTV with a gasket is bad juju and usually leaks.
Find a used aluminum one and use the correct gasket for the faying surface design. Not all faying surfaces are created equally. One designed to use RTV can cause leaks when used with a cork or rubber gasket
Don't tell that to Honda(or maybe hold a gun to someone's head while you do). . .
I don't know how many designs they have had with engines but the D17 that is in my civic has a valve cover that goes over the camshaft. The gasket has 90's in it that go from horizontal to vertical to make it over the shaft housing. You RTV those corners. I guess it allows the head itself to be shorter.
