90 YJ - Clutch Master Cylinder

Hey all -

Been trying to enjoy the Jeep as much as I can... loving the stereo, loving taking the half doors off. Not loving my new problem...

My clutch master cylinder fluid is going down and I am having trouble getting the Jeep into gear, first especially. I've topped off the master cylinder a couple times, but it keeps going down. I traced from the laster cylinder down to the tranny and I see NO evidence of leaking fluid.

Am I looking at a new clutch master cylinder? Is there a slave cylinder in the tranny that is the culprit? How do I diagnose what it is?

Thanks...

if you have absolutely no fluid from the master cylinder down to where the lines go in to the bell housing, chances are good its the slave cylinder. if that is the case you should have fluid dripping out of the bottom of the bell housing.

IMO if you have to change the slave id switch to the 94 style slave to make life easier if it ever happens again, if you can

That really takes the wind outta my sails. I gotta pull the tranny to change this out... man, the issues seem to never end with this thing. Ugh. Thanks -

yeah, be carefull and look on the inside of your cab, where the rod off the pedal pushes into the master. you will almost never see the fluid leak on the engine side of firewall. If you do happen to have to change the slave which is most likely, if you can afford it, its usually best to change master with it. Its not totally nescesary to, but one is normally wore as much as the other.

Okay, so I changed out the clutch master cylinder and bled it out good. Took it out for a test drive - the clutch works and feels nice and firm, until I get to normal operating temp... then it gets spongy if I depress and hold it when in third or fourth. Gives me trouble trying to get it out of gear. Once I toss it in neutral and release the clutch, on the next depress, it feels pretty much normal again. Strange... maybe I haven't gotten all the air out - OR - maybe the slave is indeed bad, as well...

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
