90 YJ front seals

Last winter I filled my front axle with 80weight gear lube because I saw that it was slowly leaking out down the pas. side tire. I parked the jeep on a hill in my yard w/ that tire on the down side of the slope, in the snow. I saw that it was still leaking by the small spot of lube on top of the snow. Still a small leak I thought… until the snow melted and I saw all the lube ran through that small spot and was all over my grass. In my infinite procrastination I have yet to fix the axle seal.

It is now time------ before I blow up the front end. Could ya’ll give me some advice on how complicated this will be, if the local autozone stocks the parts that I’ll need and if I’ll need any special tools like I needed for my ’88 grandwaggy. It is my DD and if I do it in the shop at work I cant leave her there while I wait for tools or seals.

Kind of on the same note: What should I put in my tranny / t-case for lube. I have all stock driveline parts: command track part time 4wheel drive, Dana 30 front & Dana M35 rear w/ 3.07 ratio. What is this green slime I have heard of for syn. Lube?

pass side is easier than driver side. pull the CAD and both passenger side axle shafts. i use a piece of allthread with a couple of washers to hammer in the new seal.

no special tools required.

There are two seals, right? an inner and an outer. It sounds like fun though. is there a clip in the dif holding the half shaft in there? Thanks for the easing of mind w/ the tools and seal rammer (that sounds like a good title for a "B" movie!) advice.

no, the only seal is right there at the CAD, itll be the outbound side of the CAD IIRC. no c clip on the front axle. just pull the hub and the shaft will come out with the stub shaft. the only outer seal (at the end of th tube)is just a dust seal. it doesnt really serve a purpose other than to keep mud and debris out of the axle tube.

now that im thinking about it, the seal goes from the inside, so you have two choices.

1. pull the driver side axle shaft and the carrier and reach thru the tube with the allthread like i said abve or (i had mine all apart so i did it like that)

2. use a slide hammer to seat the seal.

nah, if you get a slide hammer you can do it without a lot of tear down required.
