92 wrangler 4x4 help

Have a 1992 wrangler 2.5L 4 cylinder with 5 speed manual transmission. Lever to engage 4x4 inside the cab. Recently I've been having problems with the 4wd. The jeep runs fine in 2 wheel and even engages 4 wheel hi and low through the lever inside the cab but as soon as I start to release the clutch and accelerate it doesn't move. I'm thinking the universal joint is locked up but I'm not positive...any suggestions before I dive in?? Thanks!

Sounds like its stuck in neutral. A crappy u joint wouldn't prevent the car from rolling. If its not sending power to the diffs to move in 4hi, I'd say your issue is with the case. Or you could check the linkage underneath to make sure it isn't loose. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Ok. So it drives fine in 2. Goes nowhere in 4? That definitely sounds like a case issue. Even if your 4 wheel drive wasn't engaging you should still be able to move from the back 2 wheels. Have you looked under it when it's in 4 and have someone give it some gas? See if anything is spinning. I'd also double check your linkage under the jeep. I'd disconnect it and try shifting manually with the lever on the case. See if it does anything else.

I've never heard of that before but I'm definitely not an expert.

When you say it doesn't move does the engine lug down, or just keep running and the Jeep not move?

If the engine lugs down and you stop it from dying by pushing in the clutch something in the transfer case or front drive shaft is locked up. You can disconnect the front drive shaft from the transfer case to decide which.

If the engine runs fine but the Jeep doesn't move you have a transfer case problem.
