93 YJ Frame Rot/ Repair

I have had my jeep for over a year now. When I first got it I had to replace the front driverside frame piece next to the steering gear box. Was looking at the frame yesterday and found the driverside rear frame by the shackle mount is rotted now too. Here soon I will fix this piece too. I have figured out that the YJ frames are the worst design by Crystler ever!! Here are a few pics if the rot and repairs I did. More pics to come when I get around to doing the rear. Anybody have any helpfull tips to prevent more rust/ repairs?!

Took it in to get an alignment done and they said it was perfect, didn't even charge me. Guess my measurements where spot on.

Yea, especially on the YJ's. Someday I'd like to do a complete frame off restoration, probably just do a whole new frame.

mine is a lot worse then that i made cardboard template an having them cut out of 1/8th" plate then ill weld them to the frame in a good spot

Nice job on the front! I just replaced both rear frame shackle sections on my 90 yesterday. The Safe-T-Cap is a nice weld-in piece. Took about 6 hours with dropping the tank. My welds don't look as nice as yours. I threw a rod in my gen/welder this winter durning the Michigan ice storm. Had to use my little hobby stick burner. It did a pretty good job. The frames aren't very heavy are they?!

I just got my first jeep a few days ago. I thought I did enough reading and looked at all the right things when buying it. But somehow I missed looking at the rear shackles. Well tonight I did. Same thing. Both sides although passenger side is worse.

Did a search and think I'm going to go the Safe T Cap route. Anyone have experience with them? Besides painting, anything else should be done to prevent it from happening again?

I found the below video of someone installing one. In this portion, he ends up trimming the Safe T Cap to make it stronger (rounding corners) and easier to weld (by trimming off 1/2-3/4" of the top so welds can be done on the side).

Seems like good idea. Did you have to do that or was it fine as-is?

I think going to go with the Safe T Cap as we'll. I haven't even touched my jeep in over a month tho due to having my little girl and buying a house. My wrangler is my toy/ DD. But I have 2 other jeeps me and my wife drive. She drives my 94 GC and I drive the 98 Cherokee.

Cutting the top of the sides down would make it easier to weld. But I didn't have any sides or bottom left. Only the very top-strap for a good 6 inches from the rear. Take your time with the grinder and get to bare metal. I traced the part on the frame and made sure I ground the trace line off. There were a few places that I couldn't (or just didn't) grind down. The welds hit good enough there for piece of mind.

Finally have some spare time this weekend to get the rear frame around shackles replaced/ repaired.
On another note I have decided to do a complete frame off this winter and fix the body too. I also have a 5.3 engine I am going to swap in place of my 350 I currently have.
