Exclamation 93 yj noise from trany in 5th

okay I have a 120 mile commute back and fourth from work. while driving to work yesterday all highway shifting threw all the gear once I hit 5th there was a high pitch noise and rattle sounded like metal grinding. you could hear noise going in and out like something was loose. So on my way home had the top off enjoying the nice warm weather in bumper to bumper traffic after about 15 miles I noticed smell of burning brakes. When I got a chance to turn off onto the shoulder to see if the brakes were hanging up I sat there for about 15 min. to let them cool down to see if that was the problem. I then jumped back out into the flow of traffic shifting threw 1, 2 ,3 ,4, and when I went to go into 5th it wouldn't go so back over to the shoulder I went. Tried to start off again and I couldn't go into any gear had to be towed home. The tow guy thought it was the clutch that I was smelling. The question is if it is the clutch wouldn't it be able to go into gear if the car wasn't running and why would it only make noise in 5th? This hasn't happened in a while but every now and then it use to get stuck in second and with a little savvy it would release. Any input would be grateful.

has any one had this happen to them? would this sound like a clutch job or a total tear down of the trany? If you think it's a trany how reasonable should it cost for a rebuild kit ?

I just recently had a problem with my trans.. 5th gear.. It would grind going in.. and once I was off the clutch and on the gas it felt and sounded fine.. If I let off the gas.. It sounded like gremlins tearing my sh!t apart.. all sorts of grinding and banging.. Back on the gas noise went away.. It turned out that the bearing for 5th gear doesn't get I'll just say the best lubrication.. And is not uncommon for it to wear out.. As far as the clutch smell.. or being worn out..I don't see how that could stop you from getting into 5th.
I had my tranny dropped & rebuilt for $750 + parts.. Or course the parts were $850.. I Got the master rebuild kit from Quadratec.. I had to get the main cluster gear & 5th gear assembly..(It was starting to pit from moisture/water in the trans

I have an '88 YJ, similar problem - have to change the 5th gear cluster. Do it FAST before shavings and grindings impact the other gear/sync clusters!!!!!

Got under the jeep and I found that the trany was rebuilt by the previous owner. I took out the trany and disassembled it yesterday found out the problem. The main shaft bearing exploded also found the syncro springs and keys for second gear were also in pieces. I found a place on line that has just the pieces I need but they sell whole sale not to the public which is only a couple of towns away. I am going by there in the morning when they open with a stack of cash and see if they will sell me the parts list I have. I need the jeep to get to work and can't wait to buy on line most take a week or so for delivery.

Well I picked up the parts I needed and just finished rebuilding the trany .So tomorrow first thing I am going to slap it in before the glass company shows up to replace my windshield and hopefully I will be driving it on thursday. I will post back my test drive and see how good of a job I did on my first trany rebuild.
