'93 YJ- Slight ticking

Hey guys. '93 YJ w/4 cylinder. 95k miles. All original. Have developed a "tick". I should say this is not an everyday driver...have only put 300 miles on jeep since January (only drive in nice weather), but start vehicle every couple of days.

Oil level is fine. Tick is more pronounced while I'm accelerating, but nothing when I'm on level ground just driving. Can't tell if it's coming from the engine or th engine or the exhaust.

Last time I drove the Jeep, when I started it there was a slight "pop" that came from underneath where the exhaust pipe meets the manifold.

Any help with a place to start looking is appreciated.

well you could run your engine and open the hood and listen,if it was what it often is ,valve
ticking, than you will hear it coming out from the top end of the engine, just take a stethoscope or a screw driver or a piece of tubing and stick it on the valve cover and listen. this seems to be a common thing for the valves to clatter. if it is or you still cannot tell get some lucas oil and advanced auto or autozone carries this and just add it to your oil, do it with all your oil changes and really the first time you will notice it. its really thick oil should shut it up.

anyway good luck tell us whats up!

Mine ticks pretty loud too... 4.0L with 117k miles on it. The previous owner said he asked a Jeep place that worked on it, and they said it was a typical thing for them....

I personally don't like it much, only notice mine generally at an idle... but haven't found anything to get rid of it yet.

Ticking fixed

Yeah, it was the exhaust. New gasket took care of the problem.
