You broke the c clip off that holds 5th in place. Exact same problem ax5's have. Very rare on an ax15. The gear is not there to engage, and you should also here it click into gear just like normal only nothing actually happens. It is a fairly easy fix assuming everything shifts fine besides that. All you need is the clip.
I had the same exact problem as well. After ripping the transmission down I found that the end of my counter shaft with fifth gear had broken off. I'm thinking my AX15 was abused after finding this and brass shavings in the oil...

Holy crap dude. I have torn apart both ax5 and ax15, that is carnage. Wasn't your reverse screwed up though too? It seems that would have fallen on the reverse gear.
Ok thanks for the help I will year into it and check it out I heard its a common problem with the pins bending or somethin but will post pics and let u know
