You have to make sure it's at TDC and pointing to #1 on the compression stroke. If it was running before the distributor swap you're likely 180 degrees off.

You're supposed to be able to feel compression with your thumb over the spark plug hole and the piston approaching TDC. I tried this for ten minutes and it seemed like there was some compression on both strokes. When I tried to start it there was a hiccup but no fire, so I turned the crank to get back to TDC and the rotor at #1 plug, turned the crank again to get to the next TDC (rotor now 180 off from #1 plug), removed the distributor and reinstalled it with the rotor back at #1 again. Cranked right up.

The rotor tip has to be at the #1 plug position on the distributor cap when the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.
