94 to 98 4.0 engine swap, what needs to be changed?

First off, I'm new to Jeeps. Now I know why everyone loves them. Changed the oil the other day and engine started making a rattle sound towards the front of engine. Engine has unknown mileage on it but doesn't smoke or use oil. If anyone can give a hint on noise would be a help. Any way I found a low mileage 4.0 in a totaled out 98 Cherokee for $450. Figured I would get it and needed to know if it was a simple RnR or what? Any help appreciated.....

Im thinking of doing the same thing. I have an 88 yj with a 4.2 and want to swap to a 4.0 from a cherokee. I am also trying to find some info on this. Have you came across anything yet?

U need a 4.0,computer,harness,tranny,and new t case or input shaft.and u have to move the engine mounts forward.that means take your time and grind them off,fit the engine, tranny, and case and weld the mounts back in.not too bad if u have the right tools.I just done it last weekend.I've got a thread on here, check it out.4.0 swap here we go is the name of it.pm me if u have any questons

If you've already got the 4.0 in your 94, all you have to do is swap your accessories over to the 98 block and use the 94 fuel rail. The fans are in different spots, and the fuel system in the 98 doesn't have the return line. You'll also have to find a spot for the temp sensor that goes on the head of the 94. 98 has no spot for this, but you can tap one of the plugs on the lower block for that.
