95 yj conversion to 304 question

I have a 95 yj with 2.5 L engine with the ax5 trans. and a 231j tc.
it has a 3 1/2 suspension lift running 33 inch tires.
i recently got a 304 engine with less than 14k miles and I was wanting to install this engine in my yj.
have any of you done this conversion? is there an adapter for the 304 to the ax5?
any info will be greatly appreciated.

I would first off find a better trans that will able to withstand the power of the 304. I would fine a ax15 for a junk yard. it should bolt right up

Where do you live?
If you live in an emisions state, you will never be able to drive it legally, better to look for a 318 or 360 Dodge motor, 5.7L or 5.3L GM motor, or ask some of th eodd folks around here that drop Ford engines in their Jeeps....

The emissions rule of thumb for engine swaps is: Your Jeeps model year or newer engine/induction system.

You WILL want to upgrade your transmission, the AX5 is known to come apart behind the anemic power of the 2.5L Upgrade to a AX-15 or NV3550 for V8 power.

will the ax15 mount to the 231j transfer case?
I have the drive train along with the 304 but thought it would be more of an undertaking to swap all out it has the T18 and Dana 20.

The 231 behind an ax5 is a 21 spline input vs the ax15 being 23. It wll bolt up with the correct spline input shaft

^ yes, you might have to change the Tcase input shaft.
Its easy to just get the tcase with the trans (Junkyard).

After searching all day for a ax15 with no luck I am wondering if i would be better to leave the T15 trans in?
If I do what are my options for the transfer case??
I have the one that is on the 73 model but I am not sure what that will cause .for me on the shafts?
I guess my question is if I put the original 1973 engine (304),tranny (t15 3 speed),and transfer case(dana 20 I think) will it fit under the 95 yj?

Thanks for yalls help

Yep no issues there but your tcase output is on the wrong side if you do that.

You can use certain ford 4 speed trannys and all ford cases will be on the correct side

Personally I'd try to hold out for an AX15, but that's just me. Have you checked local junkyards? Local Jeepers?

If you really want to, you can always pony up the coin and buy a BRAND NEW AX15:

Advance Adapters 26-AX15 - Aisin Warner AX-15 5-Speed Transmission Assembly for 97-99 Jeep® Wrangler TJ with 4.0L Engine - Quadratec

As far as the 231, you can convert it to work. A lot of guys like to use the 231's because they can be upgraded relatively easily, and there is a lot of aftermarket support for them.

I wouldn't unless the motor is 100 percent stock. Although the ax15 is light years beyond the ax5 its still not half as strong as other options out there, and the 231 case....nah chains are for bicycles. He could use a T18, T19, NP435 mated to a 205 and have a bulletproof setup for cheap.

Or skip the manual alltogether and go automatic

thanks for the good info.I think I am going to look at the ax15 route.
I have got to get this project on the road!! Bow season opens in october...

I was hoping I could do this upgrade with out killin the old wallet... but I cant use all the drive train in the 73 in the 95. unless there is a transfer case that will mount to the T15 that I dont know about. If that is the case then maybe I could use the 304 and t-15..

As Ibuildem said, I would look into a T18, use the Dana 20 (gear driven xfer case) or pick up a Dana 300 and go with that. I had a 1972 CJ5 with the 304, T15 (which is the strongest tranny that AMC built for the CJ to be put behind a V8), D20. The only problem with the Dana 20 was a high gearing ratio for offroad. The only advantage to it is that the V8 would push through just about anything just idling but not great for crawling slow. If you can find a later model CJ7 front axle (Dana 30) with the same drop as the 20 or 300 TC's output, then I would go that route...as well as a rear axle upgrade.

would a 231 j tc match up to the tf 727 without clocking?
started thinking about maybe going to an automatic.
Being finding a manual tranny is getting to be a pain...

Glade to see your following through with your project. For your mounts here is a link to novaks page on the amc mounts they sale AMC V8 Engine Mounts for Jeeps
And heres the AA mounts 713120 : AMC V8 engine mounts | Advance Adapters
Ive heard good about both so cant really say which would be better than the other.

Did you get the matching tcase for the ax15?

I am changing the input on the transfer case
To a 23 spline.
What is the deal with the motor mounts?
Can I weld a plate to the ones out of the
73 to take up the space difference in the 95?

You could make your own, just while doing my swap (sbc) I bought mounts. Figured spending money on a piece designed by someone smarter than me and that has already been used on jeeps like mine I knew it was going to work.

The mounts from both companies work with any AMC 304 to 401 motors regardless of what it comes out of,( Jeep, Car, or truck) the motors are all the same. The mount will bolt directly to the block itself.
