'95 YJ won't shift into reverse.

I have a '95 YJ, 4 cylinder with a standard transmission that I bought, used, from a gentleman in late December 2010. It has over 202,000 miles on it, had to have the head gasket replaced as there was a 3/4" gap in the old one and I was losing compression and two cylinders weren't firing. Just a couple weeks ago the oil pan gasket and the oil sending unit blew. It ran fine after some work.

Most recently, namely today, it will not engage when I try to shift into reverse. I was able to back out of the garage this morning with no issues, but in the fifteen minutes it takes me to drive to work, it will no longer engage. All the other five gears work fine.

This is just from my little experience but sometimes mine won't go into reverse unless I roll forwards a little bit before hand, it seems like the gears aren't properly aligned.

I also read that sometimes a gear tooth can break off and cause some problems with engaging gears. Might be worth having a look inside to see if you can spot anything. Its cheap and easy to do.

Ain't Nuthin but a jeep thang. Tried checkin syncros? Shift into third while idling and let it sit for a few seconds an then try pounding reverse.

if synchro is off it will not engage, you can try to rev to 1.500 rpm, if it doesn't shift, and the above didn't help, you might have to drop the tranny
