A couple questions on engine swap. opinions needed.

Hi everyone. I have an 88 wrangler and am wanting to upgrade from the dinky 2.5L that's in it to a 4.0L or possibly a 4.3l from an s10. Which of these would be the better idea? Would either require changes to the driveline? What would be the minimum needed to PROPERLY do either install and not have issues later on? Just tying to do my home work. Haven't gotten much results after searching.

Everything you do is gonna require drivetrain changes, and on the smallest scale still a transmission and transfercase.

Money for money, a V8 swap is the most economical and will get as good or better mileage. But, that only goes if your in a state that allows it.

I know I could do a carbed 350 swap, but has anyone done or put thought into a later model Vortec swap? If its feasible, I may just get two and do the jeep and truck at the same time. the main reason I was looking at the 4.3 is because I have access to alot of parts from s10s including zr2 trannys, axles, and t-cases. if I did the 4.3, I would probably upgrade to zr2 axles (disc front and rear brakes and 4.10 gears with lockers) and the t-case and just have new drivshafts made.

Well I have a efi 5.2 out of a 98 jeep grand Cherokee. Prob with doing most swaps is, you have to watch which side the front drive line comes off of the transfer case. Most chevy's have a pass side front drive line where as ford and most dodge trucks have it on the driver side. Not all but most.

The thing with the 4.3 is, it is basically a V8 with two cylinders cut off. What I mean is that the V8 transmission is the same for a 4.3 as it is for a 305/350 other than the torque convertor having a different stall. And even with that most people can not tell the difference. So if you have access to the 4.3, I say go for it.

with mild wheeling in mind, how would my stock axles stand up to the 4.3? (until I can upgrade)

changing to zr2 axles is not an upgrade. hell the front is independent. if your running 33s or smaller the axles should be fine with a 4.3.
