Air intake question

I have the 2.5 and ofcourse im doing what i can to get the most out of my squirrells. I swapped the TB out for the bigger one, got an aftermarket exhaust, and i took both of the air restrictors out of the intake. Now I am wondering if its worth getting a CAI, or just get a High perfomance filter and keep my now larger stock intake?

most cold air intakes are not really any better then a good stock system. if you have the air filter that is a flat panel and is located in a box on the fender, you have a cold air intake already as the inlet uses a tube to connect to the radiator mount/framing and sucks cold air from under the headlights. if you go to a normal after market cold air intake that gives you a big round filter hanging in the engine bay, you just lost power because you now have a hot air intake

Well not really because the airbox opening is blocked from cold air by the fan shroud

it shoudn't be. your stock unit should have a tube that hooks to the side of hte shroud. sometimes the tube is missing but its easily replaced.

a mod i did to my 4.0s, back in the day was pull the bottom of the filter box and drill some holes in it so it could pull air form more places then just that tiny front opening.

you can also run to the hardware store and get some 2.5" pvc and some low flex or rubber couplings and build your own to test whether a cold air intake will actually benefit you. just buy a cheapy air filter that fits a 2.5 pipe and your good to go. if you feel you get a gas mileage or power improvement, then you can buy an air raid or k&n system

yours is like this? see where the box is, next to the radiator? there should be a short tube that fills in the gap from the box to a hole by the lights that lets the box pull unheated air from in front of the engine bay.

i was wrong, you are right. your is like this?

you can still make it a cold air box by adding the little pipe to the front instead of to the side of the radiator shroud or you can even add a line to the cowl area using some pvc or some type of flexible hose

just make a tube then and route it to a hole in the front below the lights or route a tube back to the cowl area

That pix is from an XJ btw. But I am in the same boat as bus I did the high flow exhaust, 4.0L T-body, even bought the spacer $75 from afe power. I ordered the afe CAI, but it was for a TJ w/2.5L, turns out they don't make one for the YJ. My air f. housing is missing that tube as well, maybe the 95 didn't come with one. I had been messing around w/ the idea of converting a Ford Ranger round air f. system.

Hey guys, how do you get the restrictors out of the tube? Do they pry out or do you have to cut them to get them out?

The one at the opening of the airbox i broke the clip holding it in and then just hammered it out. But for the one of the top of the airbox i took the top off and out of the truck. Sprayed some wd-40 in it and hammered and pryed it out, this one took a while because of the way they have it in there. Once it was out i just washed off the top of the wd residue and popped it back on
