aircraft landing lights

ok guys, i realize i completely forgot to give some info as to the aircraft lights i mentioned in a previous thread.

i dont have pics right now, will take some later today. they're nothing special as far as looks, i just have them mounted on the hood through the hinges and are perfect for everything i've ever needed.

first the bulbs are GE4509. these are aircraft landing lights, and they have a very short listed bulb time ( you may see that when looking online) but i've had the same 2 bulbs for upwards of 4 years and they are still as bright as the day i installed them. they also get used a lot, so its not like i'm just not using them.

next is the mount for them, i went to napa and bought these Truck-Lite - Catalog Product : Par 36 Rubber Multi-Purpose

the important thing is that you get a rubber housing that holds a par 36 bulb ( thats what the landing light is ) it doesnt have to be this specific one, and you can get some with different style mounts on them, depending on how you want to mount them.

as for wiring. i ran a hot wire (fused) from the battery to my switch in the panel down and to the right of the steering wheel. then from the switch to a relay and the relay to the lights, i may still be able to find the wiring schematic i drew up on my computer if needed.

Dont get caught with them powered on on a public road, I believe the legal limit is 55Watts. Aircraft lights are ALOT higher rated then 55Watts....

Ran them on a Veh. back in early 70's. They were Flat, non fluted 13volt run on
relays. Talk about a sharp pencil beam light that just goes forever.
This was in Calif. and the Citation I got back then was $375.
If Memory serves me right, I think they were a Million + Candle Power.
Last time I was ever that stupid I'll tell ya.

Good lookin out Rebel. I don't care how bright they are, or what ol smokey will say about how bright they are. This a bad @$$ idea for getting real expensive lights for relatively cheap money. I would be really interested in seeing the pics.

I just picked up my materials for getting these hooked up.

I got all the stuff to NAPA they actually had the ge4509's on the shelf. LOL! We do have an airport close.

So really I should have some pics up soon. Less than $50 in the whole setup.

55w HID's have some 350,000 candlepower. So a handful of 55w HID's in lights and you'd be sending out enough candles to burn a forest down

Not many do that cost so little. This is a pretty potent small, cheap light. If I wanted max Cp then some kc or lightforce hid lights would be the choice but for $300 + it's crazy.

Hopefully i'll have some today or tomorrow. I got sidetracked rebuilding rear bump stops and adding an air lift kit to a grand cherokee.

I almost have my windshield mounts made then the hard part...wiring.

Brings back memories. Used to replace the high beam sealed beams on Datsun 510s, 610s, 710s and 810s with GE Penetrators, Flat Lenses. Two of those in the high beam mounts aimed properly were, as you said, stupid bright. Wish I could get a pair for my Wrangler.

ANY relay will work as long as it's rated for the current draw of the lights. It appears that they are 100w lights, so any 30 amp relay will work fine.

screech1,

If you are talking about the GE Penetrators, the only mod I made to the Datsuns was to cut a notch with a hacksaw in the metal sealed beam mount to accommodate the three-eighths molded glass locator tab on the Penetrator. That took about thirty seconds. Then it was just plug the original harness into the back of the Penetrator, reassemble what had been taken apart, aim the new lights and you were good to go. No extra relays were needed.

The whole operation took less than a half hour. The results were simply amazing. Remember, IIrc the Penetrators were used as light aircraft landing lights, so when you needed to see a long, long way, they threw light "stupid" far, I'm thinking over nine hundred feet. There is no way you can outdrive these things.

I got my lights on. Damn they are bright. I need to aim them initially but will more than likley adjust them when on the trail. I can reach out and move them,
Specs are GE4509(napa equivalent) 100w @13v.
Trucklight Rubber housings(napa part # to be added)
Mounts, Wireing, and 30 A relay by me.

Lights on with headlight low beams.

Just for ref:
Low beams headlights

Highbeams:

highbeams with new lights:

I need to get some night shots. They are stupid bright for less than $50.

Thanks! I overkilled the wire and ran 12ga to them. I used some smallish rubber tubing to run the wires thru. The tubing sticks into the light housing about and inch and into the body about 2 inches. I painted the holes before i put the tube in. The holes are a tight fit. Then siliconed the crap out of them on the inside. I also ran some silicone around the outside and smoothed it off.

The relay is on the firewall right next to the battery and i ran the switch triggers and the light feed wires thru a grommeted hole i drilled right colose to there. I need to get some pics of the relay wiring and stuff too.

Me too. I had them on last night for a few minutes and they are crazy bright. Didn't have the cam with me though.

no problem. like i mentioned in the OP, i've had ppl question how long these work bc they have a short listed burn time but mine have been running good for close to 4 years and get used alot. even if they do burn out. i can replace them a LOT cheaper than name brand stuff.

mind telling me what you used and how you fabbed up those hinge mounts? also, do you think your windshield will fold down with the lights on there?

I used some 1/8th inch plate steel I had. I just made three pieces and welded them together. Seems pretty strong, it's stronger than the lights themselves anyway.

The windshield may fold down still but unsure really. Mine is pretty much not gonna move til I change the frame out.
