all dash gauges died at the same time...

What did I do?

I replaced the serpentine belt. While doing that, I had to unbolt the alternator and space it forward a little. That's the closest I came to anything dealing with wiring. No tach, speedo, temp, charge, oil, etc.

My floor light (dome?) works, headlights and running lights work, hazzards work, dash lights work on all the gauges... just no needle movement at all.

Any ideas on what the common theme is with all the gauges? Something I could have done under the hood when moving the alternator?

Thanks

ps, this is a '90 YJ with 6cyl and 5spd

The fuses were the first thing I checked and they're all good...

Maybe a stupid question, but did you check the fuses under the hood too?

ok, lesson learned. Don't take a visual inspection as acceptable. lol. I pulled each underdash fuse out one by one. They all LOOKED good, but one was bad when tested with a meter. I still don't see a break in it anywhere, but it's definitely got zero continuity through it's tabs. Replaced that fuse and all is golden once again.

Thanks!

good, thanks for posting the fix. i've been burned that way before. i tore a dash apart on a car trying to find what happened all cuz a coworker shorted a wire trying to test something. the fuse looked fine, absolutely no break, and get this, the test light lit up on both sides, it hung on by a thread, but didn't have engough to do the job.

anywho, now stick around and post up some pics of the jeep

Ok, fuse blew again but I fingered out what it was. When I got the jeep, the left rear tail light was smooshed and the bottom bulb was broken. I replaced the bulb and the lens. Before I drove out of the garage, I tried all of the lights, signals, flashers, heater, etc . . fuse still good. Backed out of the garage and took off around the corner... see where I'm heading with this? Got around the corner and noticed POOFTA... no more guages. Hm, wtf? So I go back to the garage and decide to pull the lens off that left rear again... I grab the upper bulb and it's glass is loose in the brass. I get it out and notice that the numnuts PO had a dual contact 1157 in there rather than a single contact 1156 type. Put it all back together.. test drive... all is well.

Here's a couple of pics. These are from the quick test drive. Can't tell WHAT the gas gauge is doing. Says empty, I try to put gas in it, it clicks off. Turn the car off and then the gauge shows full. Also, in 2wd (stick forward) the 4wd dashlight is on. I pull the stick back to 4h or 4l and the light goes out. Can that thing be wired backwards? I guess same question for the fuel gauge.

Just found the sticky with the info on the 4wd dashlight staying on. I have to check those lines tonight and see what I can find.

I recall mention of spring-over when I had my 89 yj.

What's that entail, costs.. parts... labor... tough job?

it is, don't let anyone fool you, some will say its cheap. to do it right costs money, and takes some skill. harder than a bolt on lift kit. but when done well, it is the best leaf spring suspension for a yj.
